The solo piano music of Joji Yuasa contains representative works from several phases of a distinguished career that has been unfolding continuously over the course of more than fifty years. Following the strong assertion of his musical identity in works such as Cosmos Haptic, Projection Topologic, On the Keyboard, and Cosmos Haptic II, works such as Subliminal Hey J. and Melodies find Yuasa, once again, reflecting upon his relationship to the legacy of Western concert music. Perhaps his renewed interest in this question—posed even more poignantly here than at the beginning of his career—may lead to yet another new phase in his compositional development.

JOJI YUASA has been actively engaged in a wide range of musical composition including orchestral, choral and chamber music, music for theatre and intermedia and electronic and computer music. Yuasa has won numerous commissions for his works from such institutions as the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Saarland Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Canada Council, Suntory Music Foundation, IRCAM and the National Endowment for the Arts. This recording is the first complete collection of Yuasa's piano works recorded and published by an American label. Pianist and music theorist Ronald Squibbs is a leading authority on the music of Joji Yuasa, Iannis Xenakis and other important contemporary composers.
